CAPS and SCARVES for Homeless Veterans
2011.10.15

After STAND DOWN Event

Approximately 125 homeless veterans came to the Stand Down at the City Auditorium on Thursday. 65 caps and 51 scarves were handed out. Five or six women took caps and scarves. The few black caps and scarves were the first to go

UPDATE - THANK YOU everyone who has contributed!
We have collected an incredible number of hats and scarves.
Ann Brown will be by the shop early Wednesday to collect all of them. So if you still wish to contribute, Tuesday before 7PM will be your last opportunity for this Stand Down event. I am sure they could use more if you wish to continue knitting and crocheting. THANKS!

I had a really wonderful time on Friday July 15th during the KICK-OFF EVENT - Knit or Crochet Caps and Scarves for local homeless veteran. Many patterns and yarns were distributed and hats started. I am already seeing the caps and scarves returning to the shop. THANK YOU!

I WILL BE COLLECTING THESE THROUGH SEPTEMBER and into early October for the Stand Down. So keep knitting or crocheting.

Our caps and scarves will be given out at the local annual Stand Down on October 13th, 2011.
The caps and scarves are for men trying to get off the streets and for a few close to making it back to a productive life. The El Paso County Coalition for Homeless Veterans and The Crawford House are two local organizations making the Stand Down happen. ***

GUIDELINES
Solid, Dark Colors-Plain, Simple, Nothing Fancy
Use the yarn and patterns of your choice
Think guys - if it is a color, yarn, stitch you think a guy would wear, it is fine

Scarves may be up to 60 inches long. (They would also like us to knit some shorter scarves in lighter weight yarn, scarves that can be worn year round. 40 to 42 inches is a good length for just around the neck and down in front. A cotton or sport weight yarn work well for the shorter scarves.)

More homeless guys wear caps than scarves. The coalition suggests we knit roughly two-thirds caps and one-third scarves. Use your own yarns or Green Valley Weavers & Knitters has a limited number of skeins available for this project. The yarn does not need to be washable.

Guidelines are just a starting point. Nothing is cast in stone. Most important: enjoy the process.

** Stand Downs are one part of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ efforts to provide services to homeless veterans. Stand Downs are typically one to three day events providing services to homeless Veterans such as food, shelter, clothing, health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits counseling, and referrals to a variety of other necessary services, such as housing, employment and substance abuse treatment. Stand Downs are collaborative events, coordinated between local VAs, other government agencies, and community agencies who serve the homeless.

The first Stand Down was organized in 1988 by a group of Vietnam Veterans in San Diego. Since then, Stand Downs have been used as an effective tool in reaching out to homeless Veterans, reaching more than 200,000 Veterans and their family members between 1994-2000.

*** The Crawford House gives a place to live and three meals and three snacks a day to ten veterans who would otherwise be homeless. It also houses an additional eight who are in the drug and rehab program. Most of the vets are men but one room is designated for women. Located at 415 South Weber, the Crawford House provides a highly structured environment with lots of rules and regulations. There are three on site managers.
The staff helps the men find a job, assists them in filing for disability or applying for low income housing or other programs for which they may qualify. The staff gives them help and encouragement as they find their way back into the life of the community. Those residents who are employed save 75% of their income toward future rent and utilities. In the course of a year, roughly 120 vets receive assistance from the Crawford House. It has a 78% success rate of moving the homeless from the streets to a productive life and a 50% success rate for those in the substance abuse program.
Vets may stay at the Crawford House for up to 90 days. Some go from there to the transitional housing next door. It has room for eleven vets who may live there for up to two years. All are employed and saving money. Some stay because they fear they will fall into old habits without the structured environment and support; others are ready to move once they have saved enough money to get started on their own.

MADRONA FIBER ARTS FESTIVAL
2011.02.28

I have recently returned from the Madrona Fiber Arts Festival in Tacoma, WA loaded with new inspirations and tips from their vendors, participants and teachers; what talent! My teachers were Franklin Habit (IT ITCHES), Anne Berk (Intarsia), Margaret Radcliffe (i-cord) and Carson Demers (physical therapist). I also spoke with Sally Melville, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee and Jared Flood. Look for related classes and tips over the next months.

TAHKI - at home
2010.04.18

TAHKI is now 18 months old (under 8 lbs.) and spends most of her time at home "training" PEPI, a chocolate lynx-point Siamese male kitten. It took them one whole day to accept one another. They play nearly constantly (eyes rolling).
Here is a photo of Tahki with her other companion.
WW bottle fed her from day 1. We have all enjoyed her progress and antics.

BABY TAHKI
2009.03.15

Tahki was found and raised by WW from day one on the 19th of September, 2008. She accompanied WW to the shop along with bottle, heating pad and box. She was four days old on her first visit. We all watched with amazement as she grew and soon began climbing out of her box with eyes still closed. Her bottle feeding stopped when she bit the nipple off the bottle! The only yarn she will not leave alone is the locally raised and spun angora rabbit so we hide it. Here is TAHKI at two weeks old with a milk mustache!
SHE now resides with the shop owner and her husband.
